Speedy receiver commits to UH

Michael Washington, an All-State football player from Pennsylvania, will accept a football scholarship from the University of Hawai'i, his head coach announced today.

"He will call Coach (June) Jones today to verify, but he has accepted the scholarship," Aliquippa High coach Mike Zmijanac told The Advertiser.

Washington is scheduled to visit UH this weekend, but he wants to commit "sight unseen," Zmijanac said. "He's made his final decision."

Washington, who is 5 feet 7 and 165 pounds, was named to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review All Class AA All-State team as a defensive back.

But Zmijanac said Washington is projected to play receiver at UH.

Zmijanac said Washington can run 40 yards in 4.3 seconds, has a 3.1 grade-point average and is "very respectful and religious."

Washington turned down scholarship offers from Bowling Green and Kent School. Zmijanac said several schools might have backed away because of Washington's size. But Zmijanac said, "It doesn't matter how big you are if nobody can catch you. He started for me for four years and nobody could catch him."

Aliquippa is a steel mill town that has produced standout athletes such as Ty Law, Sean Gilbert, Mike Ditka and Tony Dorsett.
