Bill to repeal leasehold conversion law OK'd

By Robbie Dingeman

The City Council voted 6-3 today to approve a bill that would repeal the city's leasehold conversion law.

Final approval rests with Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who has indicated he will sign the bill. However, a court fight looms.

The controversial 1991 law, known as Chapter 38, lets the city force landowners to sell to qualified condominium owners the fee interest in the leased land under their units.

After the vote, dozens of people in the audience stood and supporters of the repeal began singing the state anthem, "Hawai'i Pono'i."
