Two commit to Warriors

The University of Hawai'i football team received an offensive boost yesterday, securing commitments from a 6-foot-4 wide receiver from Seattle and a standout offensive lineman from Stockton, Calif.
Saint Mary's School's John Estes, who is 6 feet 3 and 280 pounds, will put his commitment in writing next Wednesday, the first day football recruits may sign binding national letters of intent with NCAA schools.
Slye played quarterback at Franklin High in Seattle. As a freshman at the University of Washington in 2003, Slye was a safety before moving to wide receiver. But after Washington changed coaches, Slye opted to leave, playing at Compton (Calif.) College last season.
"It didn't work out," Slye said of his stay at Washington.
In 10 games at Compton last season, Slye caught 34 passes for 623 yards and seven touchdowns.
Slye, who visited Hawai'i this past weekend, said he is impressed with UH coach June Jones, the Warriors' four-wide passing offense and Hawai'i's lifestyle.
"Every morning I woke up," Slye said of his trip, "I said, 'Man, I'm in Hawai'i.' It was just so beautiful. The people, the atmosphere, the weather I love everything about Hawai'i."
While awaiting to board a return flight to the Mainland on Sunday, Slye called his father and said, "Dad, this is heaven."
"He was really happy," Joseph Slye recalled.
Slye said he will turn down offers from Nevada-Las Vegas, Colorado State and Central Florida.
The Slyes are avid cyclists. They once went together on a five-day bicycle trip from Seattle to Vancouver, B.C., covering 330 miles. One part of the trip included pedaling 18 miles to the top of Hurricane Ridge.
"It's a lot of fun," Slye said of distance cycling. "You keep riding and riding, and go as far as you can go. It brings up discipline."
As for his role with the Warriors, he mused, "Maybe I'll go on long routes, too."
Slye's father was Franklin High's head football coach until resigning last fall. Joseph Slye coached New England Patriots running back Corey Dillon.
Slye also is related to the producers of the "House Party" movies.
Estes visits Hawai'i about two times every year, staying with his cousin, UH defensive lineman Kahai LaCount, in Kailua.
Estes took a recruiting trip to Hawai'i last month. He said he delayed announcing a decision until UH offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh visited his home in Stockton. Cavanaugh arrived in California yesterday.
Estes visited Nevada, but turned down trips to San Jose State and Utah State. He also received interest from Boise State, UCLA and Wyoming.
Estes received several honors as a Saint Mary's senior. He was named the San Joaquin Athletic Association's Lineman of the Year.
He also was named to the Sacramento-Joaquin All-Section first team. That all-star team was sponsored by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
In 2004, Saint Mary's won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship.
Estes can bench press 185 pounds 23 times.

"Yep, I'm going there," said Jordan Slye, who will compete at wideout for the Warriors.
