Kapolei takes lead in OIA West

 •  Kamehameha, Iolani boys play to 1-1 tie in ILH

KAPOLEI — Ryan Dela Cruz's floating five-foot basket with two seconds remaining did more than just win the game for Kapolei High School last night.

Kapolei's Ryan Dela Cruz soars to the basket in the second quarter against Leilehua. He later hit the game-winner with 2 seconds left.

It launched the Hurricanes into first place in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Western Division.

Kapolei (6-1) took over the top spot with a 52-50 victory over Leilehua as Radford (5-1) suffered its first defeat — a 44-33 home loss to Mililani last night. The Hurricanes also lead Campbell (5-1) by a half game.

Leilehua fell to 4-2.

"Our plan is to finish 9-1 and win the West," said Dela Cruz, a 5-foot-6 senior guard. "We've worked hard and that's what we want to do: bring it every night."

Kapolei needed every ounce of energy last night to defeat the Mules, who played without starting forward BJ Fruean because of a sprained ankle suffered in a pickup game Sunday.

After point guard Brad Padayao's free throw tied the score at 50 with 55 seconds left, Leilehua worked the ball for 20 seconds before missing a baseline layup, and the Hurricanes grabbed the rebound.

Kapolei called timeout with 27 seconds remaining to discuss strategy, but the Mules had two fouls to give before the bonus and used the second to foul the Hurricanes with seven seconds left, forcing them to inbound into the backcourt.

"We actually wanted Brad to get the ball, but (Leilehua's Keith) Spencer is a good coach and they denied him," Kapolei coach Darren Camello said. "But all year, we haven't counted on just one guy; every game the scoring is pretty balanced, and that helped in a situation like this because they all have the confidence to do it."

The unlikely hero was Dela Cruz.

"Ryan probably is our most improved player," Camello said. "He's undersized and didn't play much last year, but he worked hard in the offseason and really improved his game."

Dela Cruz took the inbounds pass and dribbled to the right of the 3-point arc, then cut toward middle and lofted a running layup from just inside the lane. It swished through with two ticks remaining, and Leilehua did not have time to inbound the ball.
