Ruth is off to good start with San Diego

 •  Two Maui swimmers enjoying fast times

San Diego sophomore second baseman Keoni Ruth, a 2003 graduate of Kamehameha from 'Aiea, went 5 for 9 with four runs in two games, but the Toreros were swept, 3-0, in a series against Cal Poly SLO last weekend.

Senior center fielder Gavin Ng, a 2000 Mililani graduate, went 1 for 2 with one run, and played in all three games.

The Toreros, ranked No. 48 in Baseball America's preseason top 50, start a five-game series with Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium today.

They play today, tomorrow and Friday at 6 p.m., and a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Women's Basketball

• UC Santa Barbara senior forward Brandy Richardson (Kalaheo '01 of 'Aiea) grabbed 10 rebounds and had five points in a 74-61 win over Pacific Saturday.

Pacific junior center Tina Sanerivi (Farrington of Waipahu) scored 20 points and added six rebounds in the loss.

• Idaho State freshman guard India Soo (Kamehameha '04 of Kamuela) scored three points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists as Idaho State defeated Portland State, 82-74, Saturday.

Portland State junior guard Sharon Wahinekapu (Kalaheo '00 of Waimanalo) had two rebounds and two assists.

• Menlo (Calif.) freshman guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) led the Oaks in scoring with 20 points and added five rebounds in a 67-54 victory over William Jessup Saturday.

Men's Basketball

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior guard Branden Kawazoe (Waiakea of Hilo) scored 13 points in a 78-68 loss to Whitman (Wash.) Friday.

Men's Volleyball

I Pacific (Calif.) senior opposite hitter Brian Zodrow (Saint Louis '01) had a team-high 19 kills and eight digs in a 3-1 win over UC San Diego Saturday.

Senior outside hitter Bryson Metz (Kamehameha '01) added three kills and four digs for Pacific.

Swimming

• California senior Caleb Rowe (Baldwin '01) and freshman Mark Eckert (Iolani '04) helped the Bears down Arizona State, 149-125, Saturday.

Rowe finished second in the 100 breaststroke (56.34) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:02.46).

Eckert finished third in the 200 backstroke (1:50.49) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:42.47).

Eckert's 200-yard medley relay team won in 1:30.18, and Rowe's finished second in 1:31.26.

• Stanford sophomore Hongzhe Sun (Iolani '03 of 'Ewa Beach) recorded two individual wins and helped with one relay win as the top-ranked Cardinal men remained undefeated with a 155-82 win over Arizona Saturday.

Sun helped Stanford win the 400-yard medley relay in 3:15.96, and he won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:49.47 and the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.19).

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) sophomore Eryn Tengan (Baldwin of Wailuku) won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:27.66 in a dual meet against Lewis & Clark Friday.

Wrestling

• Cornell senior Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) earned a technical fall at 6:29 after grabbing a 23-6 lead over Cleveland State's David Armstrong at 133 pounds, at the National Duals Meet Saturday.

• Several female college wrestlers are ranked nationally in the top eight of their weight divisions on TheMat.com.

105.5: No. 3 Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) senior Kristin Fujioka (Castle of Kane'ohe); No. 5 Missouri Valley freshman Sadie Kaneda (Roosevelt of Honolulu).

130: No. 4 Missouri Valley sophomore Clarissa Calibuso (Waipahu); No. 6 Pacific freshman Jazmine Cockett (Kamehameha of Honolulu).

Men's Tennis

• Boise State senior Ikaika Jobe (Punahou '01 of Wailupe) helped the Broncos beat Colorado, 4-0, to win the ITA Mountain Region Indoor Championship and earn the region's berth in the ITA National Indoor Tournament Feb. 17 to 20 in Chicago.

Jobe defeated Colorado's Peter Bjork, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, and teamed with Matias Silva to defeat Bjork and Marko Bundalo, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.

Jobe also defeated UNLV's Romain Massaro, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.

Women's Soccer

• Boise State sophomore forward Liane Tom (Mililani '03) was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.

Tom earned a 3.84 grade point average in computer information systems.

• Two women's soccer players from Hawai'i were named to the Big Sky Conference All-Academic team for the fall season.

Idaho State sophomore forward Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) is a pre-pharmacy major and Portland State midfielder Kari Otani (Maui '03 of Kahului) is a biology major.
