Makiki apartment building fire investigated

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a three-alarm blaze at a 11-story apartment building on Makiki Street shortly before noon today.

Five units were gutted by the fire but no injuries were reported, firefighters said. Two pets died.

Firefighters said the fire might have started in apartment 701, but an investigation is ongoing, said Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Tejada said the fire could have been contained to a single apartment if the building, which was built sometime in the 1970s, had a sprinkler system. He said the building was in complete compliance with city fire codes.

The fire was reported about 10:20 a.m. at 1634 Makiki Street, near Wilder. A column of thick smoke could be seen from the H-1 Freeway, and residents from surrounding buildings stood and stared at the blaze.
