WASHINGTON — President Bush today nominated Navy Adm. William J. Fallon as commander of U.S. Pacific Command.

Fallon is currently serving as Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Commander, Fleet Forces Command, Norfolk, Va.

The Advertiser reported a week ago that Fallon was the leading candidate for the post.

Fallon, 60, would replace Adm. Thomas B. Fargo, who has headed the Pacific Command since May 2002 and is expected to retire early this year. A change of command is scheduled for Feb. 26.
