Soto Academy raises aid money

Soto Academy students raised $1,000 for Indian Ocean tsunami relief during their spirit week earlier this month.

The 114 students in grades K-6 filled a bank with cash and checks, making a wish on a Care Bear as they made that donation.

The students will donate the money to the Red Cross at an upcoming assembly.

Students also raised $241 for the Ronald McDonald House and collected 834 pounds of canned goods for the Hawai'i Foodbank.

Alvah Scott aims to chill out

Parents at Alvah Scott Elementary School plan a fun run Feb. 10 to raise money to help cool off hot classrooms.

Garret Fujita, the first vice president for the school's Parent Teacher Student Association, said the goal is to raise $20,000.

The money will pay for certain school programs and items on teachers' wish lists, as well as help make classrooms more comfortable. "Only the sixth-graders have air-conditioning, so we're looking to maybe get some fans to put into the rooms to get some circulation going," he said.

A previous fun run brought in $5,000, which was used to make the playground safer.

The parent organization also is helping update television sets in the school classrooms.

Students are asking for flat-fee pledges. For more information, call 483-7220.
