Punahou clinches ILH crown

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Punahou School quietly clinched its first Interscholastic League of Honolulu softball championship since 1974 yesterday with a 4-0 victory over upstart St. Francis.

Manuma
The Buffanblu (13-0) lead Kamehameha (11-2) in the standings by two games with one game remaining and will be the league's only representative in the Division I state tournament.

But when the final out was recorded yesterday at Joey DeSa Field, there was no rushing the pitcher's circle for a team pile-up, no whoops or hollers from the Punahou bench.

"It wasn't climactic because we still have one more game," said senior shortstop Shanna-Lei Dacanay. "To win the ILH is a big accomplishment because it's such a grind — you've got to come out to play your best every single game. It's a big step for us and it's been a long time for our school, but we have high expectations and still have a lot of work to do. We don't really have time to celebrate yet."

Senior ace Sarah Weisskopf pitched a one-hitter and Gail Matsushima slammed a two-run double in the fourth inning to lead the Buffanblu yesterday. Punahou coach Kristl Chinen said her team's reaction to clinching the league title mirrored its approach ever since a crucial 5-0 victory over Kamehameha three weeks ago.

"It was more about taking care of business," Chinen said. "We said back then that we need to stay motivated and stay focused and keep up the intensity, and the girls did that. It's not easy to win the ILH and this is something to be proud of, but the season is not over and they want something more."

For a change, there is something more for St. Francis (7-5) after the ILH season ends Saturday, as the Troubadours have clinched the league's Division II state tournament berth in their first season as an independent team. Until this year, St. Francis had combined with Hawai'i Baptist and St. Andrew's to form a varsity squad.

"It's fun sharing this with the other girls," said St. Francis junior Anita Manuma, who transferred back after spending last year playing for Kapolei's Division I state championship team. "This is a young team, but they still play like champions — they play together and come to win."
