Remembering David Kim

By Bill Kwon

He was missed at the media center during the recent Sony Open in Hawai'i. Now, David Kim will be missed from all of our lives, although he will never be forgotten every time the golfing media check future scoreboards.

Kim, who volunteered to keep a hole-by-hole scoreboard at more than 25 local golf tournaments a year, died Jan. 17. He was 65.

Kim was definitely the media's MVP at every tournament.

For me, his death was even more personal. I've known him for more than 45 years when he worked in the press room for the Star-Bulletin, later the Hawaii Newspaper Agency and then The Advertiser.

"To me, it's a service to the players and for the love of the game," Kim said when asked why he gave so freely of his time to work the scoreboard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, starting at 6 p.m., at O'ahu Cemetery chapel.

Kim is survived by his wife, Amy, and daughters, Christine and Wendy.

The Great Scorekeeper in the Sky has now found Himself some help.
