After more than 30 years of running one of Hawai'i's largest commercial real estate firms, Andrew Friedlander is stepping down as chief executive officer of Colliers Monroe Friedlander.

He is handing the job over to former Morgan Stanley investment manager James Piane.

Piane, who lived in Hawai'i for several years in the early '90s and oversaw management of

Ala Moana Center and Bishop Square, most recently was in charge of a $3 billion Morgan Stanley portfolio as senior investment manager in San Francisco.

Friedlander will remain principal broker of the firm he co-founded in 1973 with Donald Monroe. Monroe will remain chairman of the board.

"With growing demands in our market, we think the time has come to pass the baton to someone with a long history of working with institutional investors while at the same time having a great relationship with the Hawai'i real estate community," Monroe said in a statement.
