Jewish film festival opens at UH

The third annual Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival, beginning today at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Architecture Auditorium, features seven films. All seats are $6, with a $25 five-film pass also available. 595-7521, star 814; 375-2896, 223-0130.
The films:
"Nina's Tragedies"
- The coming-of-age story of Nadav, who is in love with his aunt Nina. Winner of 11 Israeli Academy Awards. In Hebrew with English subtitles.

"Wondrous Oblivion"
- Young David's family is caught in the middle of fitting in and standing up for his new friends, a Jamaican family next door.
- Noon Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Sunday
"Seeds"
- Teens from war-torn countries such as Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan come together for three weeks at the Seeds of Peace International Camp in Maine.

"Almost Peaceful"
- Just after World War II, a group of Jewish Parisians tries to restart their lives and find happiness. In French with English subtitles.

"Rosenstrasse"
- Based on a true story of a handful of German women who saved their Jewish husbands from deportation or death during World War II. In German with English subtitles.

"Bonjour Monsieur Shlomi"
- Family comedy focuses on a boy with extraordinary cooking talents. In Hebrew with English subtitles.
- 2:30 p.m. Sunday
"The Forward: From Immigrants to Americans"
- Special presentation by director Marlene Booth of her film about the progressive Jewish newspaper that was a beacon for newly arriving immigrants.
