Eligibility uncertain for UH receiver
By Stephen Tsai
Jason Rivers, the University of Hawai'i football team's second-leading receiver last season, is not enrolled in school this semester and his availability for the coming season is in question, The Advertiser has learned.
He will need to apply for reinstatement to UH. If his application is granted, Rivers would be allowed to enroll at UH for the fall semester and play for the Warriors during the 2005 season.
The Warriors will enter spring practice with no returning starter at the four receiver positions. Left slotback Chad Owens, right slotbacks Gerald Welch and Se'e Poumele, and right wideout Britton Komine completed their NCAA eligibility at the end of the 2004 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.
Nate Ilaoa, who started at right slotback in 2003 but did not play last season because of shoulder and knee injuries, will move to running back.
Rivers, who would be a junior in the fall, missed the first four practices of the 2004 training camp while awaiting documents certifying his academic eligibility.
Last season, he caught 80 passes for 973 yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 12.2 yards per reception and 74.8 receiving yards per game.
He set a UH record with four touchdown receptions in a half against Idaho.
Ian Sample, who will be a fifth-year senior in the fall, is expected to replace Rivers at left wideout.
In an effort to replenish the receiver positions, the Warriors have secured commitments from six pass-catchers. Wednesday is the first day football recruits may sign binding national letters of intent with NCAA schools.
