Fan likely cause of Makiki fire

Advertiser Staff

A fire at a Makiki apartment complex Thursday caused more than $1 million damage, according to Fire Capt. Emmit Kane, spokesman for Honolulu Fire Department.

Kane said that an estimated $200,000 in damage was sustained by each of the five units involved and there was also smoke and water damage to other units as well as the building.

HFD said the cause of the fire was electrical, probably a pedestal oscillating fan. It started in the master bedroom of unit No. 701, Kane said.

Five families — 11 adults and one child — were left homeless by the blaze, which started at about 10:20 a.m. at 1634 Makiki St. The fire burned apartments No. 701, 801, 901, 1001, and 1101 of the 11-story building.
