HAWAI'I BRIEFS
UH-Hilo freezes degree program

Advertiser Staff and News Services

HILO, Hawai'i — The University of Hawai'i-Hilo has had to stop accepting students for one of its five master's degree programs because of a shortage of instructors.

Education Department chairwoman Jan Zulich said the department had to turn away 25 candidates for a masters in education this semester because it is short at least two instructors and lacks the money to hire additional faculty.

Chancellor Rose Tseng said the situation is temporary and she hopes master's education students will be enrolled by the fall. "It's a very important area," she said. "We won't drop the program."

The Board of Regents will ask the Legislature for $110,000 to hire two new instructors, which means a new class can begin in the fall, Tseng said.

The Education Department's five-member faculty will continue to offer undergraduate studies.

Subdivision's 1st home finished

WAILUKU, Maui — The first of 115 affordable homes at a Maui subdivision was turned over to its new owners yesterday.

The Waiehu Kou Three subdivision in Wailuku is being developed for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

Eventually there will be 115 two-, three- and four-bedroom single-family homes on lots averaging 8,000 square feet, ranging in price from $99,850 to $169,850.

Maui-based developer Dowling Co. will build 79 of the homes, while 36 will be set aside for owner-builder construction.

The homes being built by the developer will be ready for their new owners by June, officials said.
