They lived a mile apart and had friends in common.

But it wasn't until they logged on to matchmaker.com a little more than four years ago that Karla Brom and John Proud found each other.

Proud was just coming out of his second divorce. He wasn't a churchgoer or a bar-goer, and he was looking for a way to get back into dating. First he tried a dating service where you pay a fee to receive phone messages about potential dates. But it was expensive. So he turned to the Internet.

"By then I was over 60. I wanted women to see a picture that didn't look like a balding partner," said Proud, now 65, who is fit, likes skiing, backpacking and the outdoors, and has silvery hair and a close-cropped beard.

With his profile in hand, Brom did some research and gathered he was longtime science teacher at Punahou School and lived near her in Manoa.

"I thought, 'Oh, he's a solid person. Solid job. That's a good thing,'" she said. "I wanted stability."

So when he called and told her he didn't want to wait for their planned Sunday morning coffee date and invited her to a movie, she agreed.

"I liked the way he looked, and he was funny," she said. "It's almost surprising that none of our friends introduced us."

Brom, 54, a blonde jewelry designer known for her store, The Rainbow Collection, knew fairly quickly that the relationship was getting serious.

From that first weekend when they went to the movie and then met again for their coffee date and went on a hike, things just clicked.

"I liked that she was a happy person," Proud said. "And she was a bright person and easy to be around."

So they filled their weekends enjoying the outdoors and enjoying just being together.

"Age and time have taught us both a lot about being honest and forthright about things and not holding things back," said Brom, who divorced in 1988 and says she's glad she waited for the right guy to come along.

She moved in with Proud and they wondered, at their age, should they even get married?

They thought about their careers, their plans for retirement and the practicalities of marriage. There was no formal proposal. Proud knew better than to try to find the perfect ring for a jewelry designer, anyway.

They just knew they wanted to be married and to have their children from previous marriages around to celebrate.

The invitation told guests they would be going down the zip line instead of taking the plunge. Proud, director of Punahou's high ropes challenge course, was going to introduce everyone to the adventurous world of zipping down a high rope.

But he woke up Nov. 28 feeling under the weather, and the weather itself wasn't cooperating.

So they made an impromptu change of plans and called their 22 guests to come to the house, where they wed near Noelani School in Manoa Valley, surrounded by mist-covered mountains. The bride had designed their wedding bands, decorated with maile leaves.

This time around, the groom says, he's older and wiser.

"We're probably very much alike," he said. "We just roll with the punches."

The bride says she's proud to have finally found her life's mate, and she's got a new name to prove it: Karla B. Proud.
