Punahou beats Kamehameha

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Kamehameha-Punahou boys basketball game on Jan. 8 was a chess match, but last night's was a track meet.

Punahou won again, 71-58, before a home crowd of about 600 at Hemmeter Field House.

The Buffanblu, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 8-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu while the No. 8 Warriors fell to 5-4. Punahou won the Jan. 8 meeting, 46-43, in a tight defensive struggle.

"I was looking forward to playing them again because everybody was talking about how they shut me down last time," said Buffanblu sophomore guard Miah Ostrowski, who was held to a season-low seven points three weeks ago but had 24 last night. "We kept pushing the ball tonight and it was easier to attack the defense and find openings. It was a fun game — the kind I like to play in."

Kamehameha guard Ikaika Hardie apparently liked it, too, scoring 19 points in the first half. The Warriors stayed close, trailing 36-32 until Ostrowski drained a 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining in the half to put the Buffanblu up 39-32 at the break.

But in the second half, Punahou's offense kept flowing while Kamehameha's stalled. Ostrowski, Spencer McLachlin and Danny Cho sparked a 13-3 run that gave the Buffanblu a 52-35 lead with 2:20 left in the third period. Hardie, meanwhile, did not score until making a layup with a minute remaining and finished the quarter with two points.

"We stopped getting out on the (fast) breaks and stopped getting those good looks at the basket," Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said. "We didn't execute. But give credit to Punahou — they did a great job and just played better than we did."

Kamehameha made one last threat, closing to 55-49 on Hardie's layup with 5:40 remaining, but the Buffanblu responded with a 9-1 run to seal it.

"Traditionally, when we play Kamehameha it's a high-scoring game if it gets into the mid-50s," Punahou coach Greg Tacon said. "Tonight was as fast-paced as I could imagine — it got a little too crazy sometimes."

Weather plays havoc with scheduled games

Nine games were postponed or canceled on O'ahu yesterday because of heavy rains and winds.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will make a decision as to when — or if at all — its four games will be made up.

Two others were rescheduled: Pearl City will host Nanakuli tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. and the White Division championship between Kalaheo and Waipahu will be played Thursday, 3:30 p.m. at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Here are the games that were affected yesterday:

ILH — St. Francis-Kamehameha; Punahou-Sacred Hearts; Mid-Pacific-University High; Maryknoll-Iolani.

OIA — Kahuku-Moanalua; Kaiser-Roosevelt; Campbell-Leilehua; Nanakuli-Pearl City; Kalaheo-Waipahu.
