3 teams upset in OIA boys tourney

Three of the top four seeded teams were upset in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys soccer quarterfinals played yesterday.

West No. 4 Pearl City beat the East's top seed, Roosevelt, 2-1, at a sloppy and muddy Mililani field.

East No. 4 Kaiser beat West No. 1 Kapolei, 2-0, and West No. 3 Leilehua outlasted East No. 2 Castle, 3-2, in overtime in matches played at Leilehua.

Host Mililani, the West's No. 2 seed, was the only higher-seeded team to beat its opponent, West No. 6 'Aiea, 3-0.

Leilehua (8-2-1) plays Kaiser (8-1-3) at 5:15 p.m., and Pearl City (8-3-0) plays Mililani (8-0-2) at 7 p.m., in semifinals at Kaiser Wednesday. All have earned berths into the state tournament, beginning Feb. 9. One of yesterday's four losing teams will play for the OIA's remaining state berth.

Pearl City's Devin Yoshinaka scored in the 14th minute on a corner kick by Ikaika Makue, which Mark Matsumoto headed into the air and Yoshinaka headed into the net.

"All we did was press, press, press," Yoshinaka said. "We knew they would lose the ball and we could take advantage of that."

Roosevelt senior forward Holden Lau, who led the OIA with 17 regular-season goals, evened the score in the 48th minute after receiving a pass down the right line from David Aquino. Lau drove about 15 yards, beat his defender, and ripped a 25-yard shot, which bounced off the Pearl City goalkeeper's arms and into the goal.

"He has a great shot," Roosevelt coach Ed Ota said. "He shoots from everywhere, really."

One minute later the Chargers answered, taking the lead for good when Jaxon Shigemasa nailed a left-footed shot from outside the penalty box.

"The importance of scoring (quickly) is that it doesn't allow the boys to get down," Pearl City coach Wade Higaki said.

Mililani 3, 'Aiea 0: Mililani's Tyler Kilborn scored two goals and Nick Aoki added another for the Trojans.

Aoki scored in the 20th minute when Kilborn flicked a long header by teammate Cheyne Eugenio over an 'Aiea defender's head and Aoki chased the ball down to the left side of the penalty box and slotted a low, hard shot into the right corner of the goal.

Kilborn scored seven minutes later when he nailed a left-footed shot into the right side of the goal. He scored again in the 46th minute on an assist from Stephen Albano, who dribbled down the left sideline and crossed the ball.

"We planned to play a different style, but it didn't work," Mililani co-head coach Steve McGehee said of the sloppy conditions. "We just went to an English League-style of play, very direct, and let the chips fall where they may."

Kaiser 2, Kapolei 0: Kaipo Dean and Matthew Bush scored as the Cougars beat West No. 1 seed Kapolei.

Leilehua 3, Castle 2 (OT): Castle scored an own goal early in the first overtime period to give the Mules the win.

Leilehua's Syd Tom scored twice and Kory Muraoka and Chris Durlacher scored for Castle.
