TENNIS

2000 champion in Waikoloa final

Paul Goldstein, who won the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger event in 2000, advanced to the 2005 final yesterday at the Big Island resort.

Goldstein defeated fellow American Jeff Salzenstein, 6-4, 6-4, to reach today's title match, where he'll play Cecil Mamiit. Mamiit beat Brazilian Andre Sa, 6-3, 6-1.

"I told Jeff after the match that might have been the best match that I've played in four years," Goldstein said. "Jeff is playing great and really forced me to raise the level of my game today and play one of my best matches to beat him."

Mamiit has worked his way through the draw by keeping the ball in play, working hard and chasing down balls.

"I think what has helped me through the week is my steadiness," Mamiit said. "People get frustrated with my game."

In the doubles final, Thailand's Sonchat Ratiwatnana and Sanchai Ratiwatnana outlasted Americans Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5, in a match that started Friday afternoon but was called because of darkness at 5-5 in the third.

On the women's side, No. 1 seed Marie-Eve Pelletier of Canada reached the final when Rossana Neffa-De Los Rios of Paraguay retired at 3-1 in the second set because of illness.

Pelletier will play seventh-seeded Hana Sromova, who ousted American Carly Gullickson, 6-4, 7-6 (0).

In the doubles final, American Kaysie Smashey and Natalie Grandin defeated Lauren Breadmore and Ayami Takase, 6-3, 6-4.
