Cadman, medical school dean, takes leave

Advertiser Staff

Dr. Ed Cadman, dean of the University of Hawai'i's John A. Burns School of Medicine, will take leave effective immediately to address a personal health crisis, the university said today.

Cadman arrived at UH five years ago and has led a dramatic turnaround at the medical school that includes a hefty increase in the school's federally financed research projects and the building of a new Kaka'ako campus.

Based on Cadman's counsel, university interim President David McClain will recommend that Sam Shomaker, vice dean of the medical school, assume the role of acting dean, according to a UH press release.

Cadman formerly was chief of staff of Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital, professor of medicine at Yale and senior vice president of medical affairs for Yale-New Haven Hospital and Health System.
