Police opened a criminal investigation after a 1-year-old Waimanalo girl was brought to a hospital emergency room yesterday for treatment of a leg injury.

A doctor who examined the girl about 12 p.m. determined that the girl's left leg was broken and that the injury was suspicious in nature.

Police were called and classified the case as a second-degree assault. No arrests had been made of this morning.

Man critically injured in moped accident

A 20-year-old man was critically injured yesterday morning after the moped he was riding collided with a car in Kaimuki.

Police traffic investigators said the moped operator was ewa-bound on Wai'alae Avenue and was traveling above the posted speed limit when he ran a red light and crashed into Chevrolet Cavalier that was turning left from Waialae onto Third Avenue.

The 25-year-old woman driving the Cavalier was not injured, but the moped rider was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition upon arrival.
