FAMILY TIES: July 9-31

Get your game on as Subaru of Hawaii presents Pearlridge Center's annual large-scale exhibit, Gigantic Games. Larger-than-life games and hands-on activities turn the shopping mall into an interactive educational exhibit for the young and young at heart. Take your turn at oversized favorites such as Operation, chess, Jenga, tic-tac-toe, Connect Four, mazes and foam building blocks. Keiki can even create their own games at the activity pavilion. Admission is free.

BENEFIT: July 9

"Shine a Light on Lupus" at the Hawaii Lupus Foundation's annual fund-raiser twilight walk. This 1.8-mile course includes pre-walk festivities with registration, balloon fun and face painting at 4:30 p.m. Entertainment includes Guy Cruz, the Honolulu Boy Choir and "Up and Coming Artists of 2005." Adult registration is $25, or $10 for children 12 and younger.

BOOK SALE: July 9-16

More than 100,000 books will be offered at the 58th annual Friends of the Library of Hawai'i sale, a tradition that draws the book lovers in all of us. Expect to find books in every category and for every age, CDs, videos, DVDs, records, books on tape and collectible books, too. Members of the Friends of the Library get a special preview, 5:30-7:30 p.m. July 8. Other specials: fiction and records at half price, July 11; seniors 60 and older receive a 25 percent discount, July 12; 50 percent discount for Friends of the Library members, July 13; 25 percent off if you show your Hawai'i library card, July 14; everything at half price, July 15; and all items at 50 cents each or two paperbacks for 50 cents, July 16. Admission is free.

CONCERT: July 16

Baby boomers, get ready for an explosive night of music at "The Boomer's Summer Blast," featuring Vene Marie and The Score. Hear favorites from Chicago, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Doobie Brothers, Tina Turner and more. Comedian Rodney Villanueva also appears. Admission is $25 advance or $30 at the door, which includes one free drink. Doors open at 8:30 p.m.

DANCE: July 16

Moanalua Gardens Foundation presents the 28th annual Prince Lot Hula Festival featuring 13 hula halau. Besides hula performances, this non-competitive event features exhibits, demonstrations, Hawaiian arts and crafts and cultural learning activities such as lauhala weaving, artwork, feather lei and fishponds. A free trolley will run between Tripler Medical Center and the park. Nalani Olds and Wendell Silva emcee. Admission is a $3 donation.

OPERA: July 22-31

The summer gets HOT when Hawaii Opera Theatre presents the Gilbert and Sullivan comedy "Pirates of Penzance." The swashbuckling crew includes Michael Gallup as Major General Stanley, Curt Olds as Pirate King, Jean Stillwell as Ruth and George Dyer as Frederick. Henry G. Akina directs. Tickets are $20-$75 for shows at 8 p.m. July 22 and 29 and 4 p.m. July 24 and 31; $15 adults and $10 children for the family matinee at 2 p.m. July 23; and $25 for military and groups of 20 or more at 7:30 p.m. July 30.

EXPO: July 23-24

The Hawaii All-Collectors Show 2005 boasts the state's largest collectibles and antiques show and sale with more than 200 booths of international, Mainland and local dealers. A special display, "The Golden Age of Pro Wrestling in Hawai'i," is a benefit for the Alzheimers Association; and the 'Ukulele Guild of Hawai'i will build two 'ukulele during the show as a benefit for Ukes for Kids. Admission is $4 general, $2 children 7-11 and free on Sunday for seniors 65 and older.

The Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, left, will be held in conjunction with the All-Collectors Show, featuring surf memorabilia, Hawaiian and surf collectibles. Bidding fee is $50 (includes a T-shirt and other items). Proceeds benefit the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association's Junior Guard program. Admission is free.

CONCERT: July 29-30

The KCCN FM100 Birthday Bash turns 15 with two nights of local music. The first night features Fiji, left, Bruddah Waltah, Ho'aikane, 'Ekolu, Koa'uka, B.E.T., One Groove, C&K, Kekai Boyz and Malino. The second night offers sounds from Kapena, Natural Vibrations, Sean Na'auao with Bruddah Waltah, Ho'onu'a, the Brothers Cazimero, Keahiwai, Inoa'ole, Opihi Pickers and Kamakaiwa. Tickets are $19 lawn and $19.50 terrace per show; discounted two-show tickets also available. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. the first night and 4 p.m. the second night.

CONCERT: July 29-30

The 12th annual Hawaii International Jazz Festival features two full nights of big music. The July 29 concert focuses on Piano Titans and Hawaiian Strings. On July 30, enjoy Latin jazz and soul during a tribute night to Ray Charles, Martin Denny and Artie Shaw. The artist lineup includes Makoto Ozone, Don Grusin, right, Scott Martin, Jeff Peterson, Owana Salazar, Abe Lagrimas, Keahi Conjugacion, DeShannon Higa, Gabe Baltazar, John Kolivas and the Hawaii International Jazz Festival All Star Big Band. Tickets are $25, $40 and $50, with discounts for seniors, military and students. A two-day pass is available, which features $5 off the second night.

Go for a strum on a summer morning at the Starbucks 35th annual Ukulele Festival, above, featuring the talents of an 'ukulele orchestra of 800 students and Grammy award-winning R&B singer James Ingram. Guest artists include Raiatea Helm, Ohta-san, Lyle Ritz, Daniel Ho, James Hill, Joy, Holunape, Keale Ohana, Yuji Igarashi, George Matsushita, Yasuhiko Ariga, Nihon Ukulele Association and Rocky Brown. Loggins and Messina return

Tickets go on sale today for a Honolulu concert by Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, who reunite and reignite pop hits that include "Your Mama Don't Dance," "House at Pooh Corner" and "Love Song."
