ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Country rocker's gigs

Advertiser Staff

HAPPENING

Rick Monroe is a rock 'n' roller with a country heart. The Sarasota, Fla., native has a just-released third disc of foot-stomping hillbilly rock called "Against The Grain" to prove it. And he has an 8 p.m. opening slot for country-rock duo Montgomery Gentry at BayFest penciled into his Saturday schedule. Also, Monroe takes up residency at Nashville Waikiki on Kuhio

Avenue at 9:30 tonight and at 10 p.m. Sunday for some live late-night tunes. Call 926-7911.

IT'S A GUY THING

Getting dressed

Guys spend more time getting ready in the morning than you might think — or than they might admit. According to a new book called "When It Comes to Guys, What's Normal?" by Bernice Kanner (Gillette Co., $9.95), 63 percent of them take at least half an hour to primp. And while boxers may seem to be the underwear du jour, many — 42 percent — prefer briefs.

FINAL WORD

"Those first few weeks (of motherhood) were really intense. I thought I'd be, like, Earth Mama, breast-feeding while I walked around the pool. But I was a mess. I cried every day for two weeks. I must say though, it's because I'm dramatic."
