Fire deliberately set, officials say

Advertiser Staff

A fire that destroyed an abandoned building in Kaimuki Wednesday night was deliberately set, fire investigators said.

The fire at the former Vintage Isle antique shop at 2909 Wai'alae Ave. was reported at about 7:30 p.m.

Honolulu fire Capt. Kenison Tejada yesterday said damage was estimated at $100,000.

Three people were seen running from the fire. Police questioned a man, woman and boy, but made no arrests.

Neighbors have complained that the area is a haven for illegal drug activity.

Oakland girl, 12, killed in crash

LIHU'E — A 12-year-old girl was killed Wednesday in a head-on collision on Kaumuali'i Highway just west of the Kipu Road junction.

Police said the girl, a visitor from Oakland, Calif., was a rear-seat passenger in a car that crossed the center line and hit a pickup truck at 3:30 p.m. Two other passengers in the car were last reported in serious condition at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. The car's driver, a 43-year-old woman, and a Koloa woman who was the only occupant of the truck were treated for minor injuries and released.

Police said the girl's mother was in a car following the vehicle that crashed. The names have not been released.
