Two pools likely to open this weekend

There's some good news for urban swimmers: City officials expect the Manoa pool to reopen at 1 p.m. today, and the Palolo pool might open as soon as tomorrow.

Pool updates

To find out whether the pool in your area has reopened:

• Manoa pool: 988-6868

• Palolo pool: 733-7362

The latest delay in the pump repairs for the Palolo pool is frustrating news for residents there. Karen Iwamoto, president of the Palolo Community Council, is shaking her head over the pool being closed for three weeks at the peak of the summer season.

City official Clifford Lau said the city is still working to get the pool going this weekend under the warranty with the private contractor.

"The contractor could not get the motor and pump back from the shop," Lau said, but hopes to try again today, which could reopen the pool by 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Iwamoto noted that the Manoa pool was fixed in a week. "It seems to be that Palolo always takes the last place on the priority list," she said. "There's no good reason why we should not have a pool for our residents."

City parks director Lester Chang said parks officials know the community wants the pool and are optimistic that the fix is near.

However, "we won't know until tomorrow," Chang said.

Iwamoto said she's especially concerned about the young people and senior citizens who rely on the pool for exercise.

"We're into half the summer already and the kids can't go into the pool," she said. "It's a beautiful pool, it just doesn't work."

Last year, extensive renovations — delayed repeatedly — kept the Palolo pool closed until September.

The Palolo pool work being performed this year is still under warranty, and the repairs are being done at no cost to the city, officials have said. The motor for the pool's pump blew out after a Hawaiian Electric Co. power outage, officials have said, and the construction company had to get parts from the Mainland.

Meanwhile, a third Honolulu pool, McCully, is closed until next summer for renovations.
