ISLAND SOUNDS

Singers get spiritual on latest CDs

By Wayne Harada

Let's get inspired this week.

Two different approaches to hymns and Christian music provide choice for music fans; one's purely Hawaiian, with subtle and soothing classics linked to the past; the other compiles contemporary tunes (as diverse as those who perform them) that speak to the souls of a new generation of worshippers.

"HYMNS OF HAWAI'I, VOLUME 2" by George Kahumoku Jr. and Daniel Ho; Daniel Ho Creations

Genre: Hawaiian hymns and gospel music.

Distinguishing notes: George Kahumoku Jr. and Daniel Ho bring their mild-mannered and easy-going vocal and instrumental sound to a second collection of Hawaiian hymns sung in the native language. Kahumoku's guitar and Ho's 'ukulele (a new KoAloha D-VI, six-string number, utilized for the first time) frame a poignant and powerful array of classic hymns that touch the heart. Many are translated by the reverent Lorenzo Lyons, including "Nani Ke Li'i Ki'ek'ie (Glory to God in the Highest)," "Hosana Nui Ia Iesu," "Nu 'Oli." One of the best is "Ke Akua Mana E (How Great Thou Art)." The selections all have a link to Kahumoku's past, either heard in church or shared by family in worship. For instance, "Kei Ka Hoa O Iesu La (What a Friend We Have in Jesus)" used to be sung by Kahumoku's mom and dad at family get-togethers when he was a child.

The outlook: Inspired by the success and acceptance of their earlier collaboration, this "hana hou" was a natural follow-up release.

Our take: With tranquil ki ho'alu and 'ukulele providing support, the hymns are eloquent reminders of a lasting and luminous part of Hawai'i's past and present — and, undoubtedly, future.

"PRAISING HIM ISLAND STYLE, VOLUME 3" by Various Artists; Quiet Storm Records

Genre: Contemporary Christian music.

Distinguishing notes: Inspirational and Christian music, performed by contemporary Island Hawaiian artists, provides an uplifting experience for the soul. There's variety and diversity of style: for a modern take on the Lord, seek out "Pono" by Reign, "Lonely No More" by Jeff Rasmussen, "Footprints in the Sand" by KA'U, "He Touched Me" by Ekolu; for a Hawaiian flavor, The Makaha Sons' "Pule A Ka Haku (The Lord's Prayer)" is a keeper; for a booster shot of emotion, try "I Love You, Lord" by Lorna Lim, "I Will Worship His Name" by Zacc Kekona and The Mana'o Company's "He Will Carry You"; for a wordless but warm instrumental, single out Moon Kahele's "E Ku'u Morning Dew/Amazing Grace." Other artists represented: O'Brian Eselu, Rodney Arias Jr., Wendell Warrington, Pomai & Loeka, Tabuya.

The outlook: A positive outing, with joyous sounds — without pressure or prayer. The liner roster lists discs where more Christian vibes by each artist can be found.

Our take: Play this in your car en route to church.
