Man injured in motorcycle crash

A 45-year-old Waipahu man was critically injured yesterday in a motorcycle accident in Royal Kunia.

Police said the 1997 Harley-Davidson went out of control on a left bend on Anoiki Street at 11:08 a.m. It drove onto the south sidewalk and hit shrubbery and a tree.

The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with head and possible internal injuries, police said. He was not wearing a helmet.



EWC fund aids Indonesia school

A $31,400 grant from The East-West Center Tsunami Relief Fund has been awarded to the rector of the Ar-Raniry State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

Center officials said the grant will enable students from the institution in the tsunami-ravaged provincial capital to complete their college degrees in Jakarta.

Additionally, center President Charles Morrison and the rector, Rusjdi Ali Muhammad, signed a memorandum of understanding between the East-West Center and IAIN, under which the two institutions will develop further cooperative activities.

Under the agreement, IAIN faculty, students, staff and alumni will have opportunities to participate in regular center programs, including graduate degree and fellowship programs, the Asia Pacific Leadership Program and the Asian Studies Development Program's summer seminars. It also will allow collaborative research and short-term library research and language study.




Wallis group to hold concerts

The 25-member Wallis Islands Ensemble, a group from the French Polynesian territory of Wallis and Futuna, will perform a series of public concerts, including two free performances at noon tomorrow at Honolulu Hale and at 2 p.m. at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

The series, sponsored by the East-West Center Arts Program, also will include a free performance at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the East-West Center Friendship Circle. The group will also perform at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bishop Museum and Saturday at the Polynesian Cultural Center.



Libraries receive freedom books

Ma'ema'e Elementary School Library and the Kapolei Public Library will each receive the 15-book "We the People Bookshelf" from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The libraries are among 1,000 nationwide to receive the books on freedom in honor of Independence Day.

As part of the award, libraries will hold programs or events to raise awareness of the classic books and engage young readers.



Vets get toll-free benefits number

A toll-free number is now available to veterans throughout the Pacific U.S. Territories and the island of O'ahu who wish to obtain general benefits information or learn the status of benefits payments. The number is (800) 827-1000.

The number will also enable veterans on O'ahu, Guam, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands to access a wide range of benefit information available on the national menu. Neighbor Island veterans have had access to the toll-free number for years.

Medical appointments at the Honolulu VA Medical Center can still be arranged toll-free from most areas by dialing (800) 214-1306.



WCC to host day of 'ukulele, hula

Windward Community College's Hawai'i Music Institute will host 'Ukulele & Hula 2005, a series of workshops for beginners to experienced players and dancers from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 23.

Hula sessions will be taught by renowned kumu hula Noenoe Zuttermeister and Kawai Hewett. Master 'ukulele instructors Benny Chong, Ron Loo, Gordon Mark, Herb Ohta Jr. and Bruce Shimabukuro will lead 'ukulele lessons.

The day will end with a ho'ike, where students and instructors share their accomplishments with a performance in Paliku Theatre.

The cost is $90 for the entire day, including lunch, or $30 a session. Scholarships through the Hawai'i Community Foundation-Murabayashi Scholarship Fund are available for eligible students in grades six through college.

School collecting HI 5¢ containers

Kailua High School's Project Graduation 2007 will have a HI 5¢ can and bottle fundraising drive Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school's parking lot.
