Bottle bashing reported

Advertiser Staff

Police this morning were holding a 20-year-old man in connection with an incident outside a Waikiki bar in which a 22-year-old man reported being struck on the head with a beer bottle.

The older man told police he left a Kalakaua bar about 1:10 a.m. when he stopped to talked to a group of women outside the bar.

While he was talking to the women, a second group of women approached and got into an argument with the first group and he tried to intervene, the victim told police. He said he was trying to break up the argument when three men approached and began to argue with him.

The victim said he had begun to walk away when he stopped to confront one of the men, at which point he was hit on the back of the head with bottle, resulting in a deep cut.

Police said the victim ran from the area, found a patrol officer, returned with the officer and identified the man who hit him.

The alleged assailant was then arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Big Island blazes extinguished

Big Island firefighters dealt with a total of 11 fireworks-related incidents between at about 4:40 p.m. Saturday and about 9 p.m. last night, according to a report issued by the Hawai'i County fire Department.

The first call for assistance came about 4:40 p.m. Saturday when Honoka'a Fire Station units responded to a brush fire at a site adjacent to Spencer Road while the final call came at 8:58 last night in the form of a brush fire in Waikoloa.

In addition to the 10 grass and brush fires, firefighters also put out a Dumpster fire that appeared to have been started by fireworks at an apartment complex on Banyan Drive.

None of the incidents resulted in any dollar loss to property and there were no reports of fireworks related personal injuries.
