To participate, students must sign up at least a week in advance of each session. Sign-up and further information is available at www.uhh.hawaii.edu under the "Manukahi" announcement.

The sessions allow new and transferring students to meet with academic advisers, choose appropriate classes for the fall and register before campus orientation in August.

Those who cannot attend one of these early sessions will be able to participate in advising and registration during orientation, which begins Aug. 15.

College prep courses listed

Students entering high school may want to consider the course selections recommended by college admission testing company ACT to best prepare them for college or work-training programs:

• Math: algebra I, geometry, algebra 2 and at least one upper-level course such as trigonometry, pre-calculus or calculus

• Science: biology, chemistry and physics

• English: English 9 through English 12

• Foreign language: one or two years of study

• Social studies: at least three years of social studies coursework

The ACT report, "Courses Count: Preparing Students for Postsecondary Success," explains how some upper-level courses will help students when they reach college. To read the report, see www.act.org/path/po licy/reports/index.html.
