Police Beat: Father, son battle Kalihi blaze

Advertiser Staff

A small fire this morning caused about $8,000 in damages to an apartment in Kalihi.

The fire, at 1815 Colburn St., was reported a little past 8 a.m.

Domiciano Tungpalan said he awakened to the smell of smoke and went to a bedroom where his 27-year-old son sleeps. Tungpalan said he saw smoke and small flames coming from a blanket and a plastic chair in the room.

"My son and I, we fight the fire," Tungpalan said.

He said he went down the exterior stairs that lead to his son's bedroom on the second-floor of the two-story duplex, grabbed a garden hose, pulled it back up the stairs and began to shoot water on the fire while his son grabbed a blanket and tried to smother it.

Tungpalan said he believes the fire was largely extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

"They told us to get out because the smoke was too much," Tungpalan said.

He said he and his son breathed in "plenty smoke" but were not otherwise injured.

Fire officials said the fire was likely caused by a candle.

Teen arrested in police assault

A 17-year-old boy was arrested at a Waipahu drive-in restaurant last night after he allegedly punched two police officers who were responding to a call about an assault in progress.

A motorcycle officer arrived at the drive-in on Maloalo Street about 9:45 p.m. and asked the boy to step outside so he could question him. The officer said the boy then hit him in the face without warning.

Police said that as the boy was leaving the restaurant, he ran into a second officer, who was also wearing a full uniform, and punched him in the face as well.

The boy was eventually subdued by other officers who were arriving at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of assaulting the two police officers.

Eviction leads to fight

A 27-year-old Kalihi man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly threatened to stab a woman at a home on Linapuni Street.

The woman, 23, told police that she had asked the man to move out and that he began to argue with her at about 9 p.m. , then pulled out a knife and threatened her. Other people at the home saw what was happening and called police, who arrived and arrested the suspect on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
