Military identifies Pearl Harbor SEAL killed in Afghanistan

Advertiser staff and wire reports

Lt. Michael P. Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., a Navy SEAL assigned to Pearl Harbor, has been identified as one of two Navy SEALs whose remains were recovered Monday from a mountainous part of Afghanistan.

The two sailors were part of a four-man SEAL team that went missing June 28. A third sailor was rescued and a fourth remains unaccounted for.

The search for the four sailors ended in a fatal helicopter crash that claimed the life of 16 military personnel, including three additional Pearl Harbor SEALs.

Murphy was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One.

Also identified today was Petty Officer 2nd Class Danny P. Dietz, 25, of Littleton, Colo.

Dietz was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team Two, Virginia Beach, Va.

A Pentagon news release states "Both died while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan."

No other details were released.
