"War of the Worlds" declared victory over the Independence Day weekend, raking in about $64.5 million for its Friday to Sunday run and an estimated $77.6 million since Wednesday. The Tom Cruise alien invasion epic averaged $19,857 for each of its 3,908 theaters, reports Exhibitor Relations. At second place is "Batman Begins," taking in $18.7 million for the long weekend, then "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," maintaining its third place from the previous week with $12.7 million. The big-screen adaptation of "Bewitched" still had some magic with its fourth-place finish with $10.8 million.
