UH diver triumphs in Sweden

University of Hawai'i diver Mats Wiktorsson won the 3-meter springboard and platform events at the 2005 Swedish National Division Championships this past weekend in Jonkoping, Sweden.

Wiktorsson, a sophomore from Jonkoping, scored personal bests of 612.15 points in the 3-meter springboard and 531.95 in the platform.

He also placed third in the 1-meter springboard with 311.05 points.

Wiktorsson was named the National Independent Conference Diver of the Year this past season.



BASKETBALL

Stockton at camp

The Basketball Essential Skills Camp, featuring retired NBA All-Star John Stockton, begins today at Manoa Valley District Park.

The former Utah Jazz point guard, who is the NBA's career leader in assists and steals, will help teach fundamentals of the game, along with 13 other instructors, to youngsters 10 to 17.

The camp runs through Friday and will emphasize technique, footwork and balance in both individual and team drills from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day.

U.S. defeats Japan

The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Japan, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 29-27, Sunday at Seoul Student Gymnasium to even its record at 3-3 in the World Grand Prix.

With Hawai'i's Robyn Ah Mow-Santos and Lindsey Berg setting, Nancy Metcalf scored a match-high 31 points and Tayyiba Haneef added 22 on the final day of the second weekend of play in the women's premier annual tournament.

Metcalf (seven blocks) and Haneef (six) combined for 13 of Team USA's 19 blocks as the Americans stifled Japan's quick attack. Japan dropped to 4-2.

Metcalf, the tournament's leader scorer with 134 points, added 24 kills in the win.

The U.S. outlasted the Dominican Republic, 23-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16, 15-6, Saturday.

Beginning Friday, the U.S. will play Thailand, Japan and Poland in Bangkok. The top five teams after pool play advance to the championship round along with host team Japan. It will be July 13 to 18 in Sendai.



CYCLING

Pedaling in paradise

The 8th Annual Paradise Ride cycling event will be held on three islands from July 9 to 15 as a fund-raiser for HIV/AIDS prevention.

The ride includes routes on O'ahu, Maui, and Kaua'i for about 50 miles a day and a total of approximately 300 miles for the entire event. Participants and their bicycles will be flown island to island between days.

The three organizations benefiting from this year's ride will be the Life Foundation, Maui AIDS Foundation, and Malama Pono — Kaua'i AIDS Project.
