UH softball player earns league's top scholar honor

Former University of Hawai'i softball player Tracie Uchima today was named the winner of the Stan Bates Award as the Western Athletic Conference's top female scholar-athlete.The award, which recognizes academic and athletic achievements, includes a $2,000 post-graduate scholarship.
Uchima, a senior outfielder from Torrance, Calif., earned a bachelor's degree in animal science. Her cumulative grade-point average was 3.81.
This past season, she hit .327 and scored a team-high 31 runs.
