"Big Brother 6" debut, 7 p.m., CBS. The TV landscape has changed hugely since the summer of 2000. "Big Brother" was a modest success then, "Survivor" was a huge one and reality TV began to soar. Now the shows must try harder to get attention. This year, "Big Brother" has a new, two-story home and a complex gimmick. Two contestants, for instance, had a relationship before the show. They are told to keep that secret. If they manage to be the final two people, the winner gets $1 million (instead of the usual $500,000) and the runner-up gets $250,000. What these two don't know is that each person in the house has a relationship friends, co-workers, significant others to keep secret. Each doesn't know that the others do, too. This year's 14 contestants vary in age only from 22 to 34. In jobs, they include cocktail waitress, Arena Football League dancer, firefighter and emergency room nurse.
OF NOTE
"X-Men" (2000), 5 and 7 p.m., FX. This action film has Patrick Stewart working with a team of attractive mutants, including some played by Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.
"Joey," 7 and 7:30 p.m., NBC. Two funny-enough reruns air. In the first, Joey decided to join Michael's book club to meet women. It doesn't occur to him that this might require reading a book. In the second, he gets understudy roles in three theater shows. That one starts slowly but leads up to a great moment.
"Will & Grace," 8 and 8:30 p.m., NBC. The first rerun eyes Grace's difficulty connecting with her aloof dad (Alan Arkin); Karen comes along and links with his friend (Lee Majors). The second includes a gay TV focus group that leads to Jack's new career.
"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," 8 p.m., CBS. Two women's bodies were buried together.
"Get Shorty" (1995), 9 p.m., USA Network. Skillfully directed by Barry Sonnenfeld ("Men in Black"), this comedy-adventure has John Travolta as a slick crook entering the movie business.
"ER," 8:59 p.m., NBC. Kerry Weaver finally meets her mother, who, at 15, gave her up for adoption. They soon clash.
"Without a Trace," 9 p.m., CBS. An heiress disappears on her way to a party.
