Kimberly Kim tied for fourth in Rolex

Kimberly Kim, a 13-year-old from Pahoa, is tied for fourth after yesterday's first round of the 28th Rolex Tournament of Champions on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Mari Chun, a recent Kamehameha Schools graduate, is tied for 15th.

Kim had four birdies and three bogeys for a 1-under-par 70 at Long Cove Club. She trails Californians Jennifer Osborn and Sydney Burlison, who both broke the women's competitive course record by shooting 68.

Kim is one of six players in the girls' field in the Class of 2009. The six are the youngest in the tournament.

Chun, headed to Stanford on a golf scholarship, had two birdies and three bogeys for a 72.

The tournament is conducted by the American Junior Golf Association. The 72-hole stroke-play event has a cut after today's second round. The 165-player field (girls and boys) features 67 Rolex Junior All-Americans and players from 28 states and six foreign countries.

Rolex is one of 11 majors on the AJGA schedule. It is the longest running AJGA event.


FUJIKAWA, MORINAGA LEAD JUNIOR EVENT

Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa and Waipahu's Kayla Morinaga led the 16-17 age divisions after the first round of the seventh event on the Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series yesterday at Turtle Bay's Fazio Course.

Fujikawa shot a 2-under-par 70 for a three-stroke lead over Kapa'a's Sean Ogawa.

Morinaga shot a 1-over-par 73 to take a four-stroke lead over Kane'ohe's Jaclyn Hilea.

Honolulu's Chan Kim (68) leads the boys' 13-15 division by one stroke and Honolulu's Kristina Merkle (78) also has a one-stroke lead in the girls' 13-15 division.


42ND ANNUAL OCC INVITATIONAL BEGINS

The 42nd annual Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational starts this morning. Seventy players will compete for the individual championship through Saturday. The field is cut in half after tomorrow's second round.

The team championship will be contested over the first two days. Format is five-player teams with the best four scores used each day.

Jonathan Ota will not be able to defend his championship because of his participation in the U.S. Public Links Championship.

Former champions Brandan Kop (1998) and Eric Sonnenberg (1988 and '99) are playing this year, along with Manoa Cup champions Travis Toyama (2002, '05), Ryan Perez (2004) and Kellen-Floyd Asao (2003). Others in the field include Clayton Gomi, Shannon Tanoue, Del-Marc Fujita, Jarett Hamamoto, Mathew Ma and Alvin Okada.

Play begins at 6:45 a.m. today and tomorrow, and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, with the leaders expected to finish by 6 p.m.

  • The U.S. Golf Association Women's State Team qualifier will be run on Aug. 9, in conjunction with the first day of the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Mid-Pacific Country Club. Players with the three lowest scores will be eligible for the national Women's Team Championship, Sept. 27 to 29, at the Berkeley Hall Golf Course in Bluffton, S.C.   • Entries are also available for the HSWGA Stroke Play Championship, Aug. 9 to 11 at Mid-Pacific. The tournament, which is the final women's major of the year, is open to players with a handicap of 9.4 or lower. Entry fee is $150.
