It's a big weekend for bon dances across the state, and yes, you, too, can step on up, whether it's your first or 50th time at a celebration.
In the Japanese tradition, o-bon is the season to pay tribute to ancestors, and in Hawai'i, the ritual has expanded as colorful community gatherings. Here you'll find young and old dancing to music put forth by the musicians and singers in the yagura (tower) that is central to the celebration.
You'll also find food booths offering saimin, hotdogs, barbequed meat, shave ice and soft drinks. It's a grand social hour, too, as older folks catch up and younger ones connect.
Don't know the dance steps? Just join the crowd and follow along (mimic the motions of the dance-club members, who are often dressed in lovely kimono).
Below is a list of bon dances going on this weekend around the state. Admission is free, but you'll want to bring cash to buy snacks.
