JUDGES, MEDIATORS COMPLETE COURSE
Judge Walter Heen (Ret.), Judge Victoria Marks, Judge Patrick Border, Judge Marie Milks (Ret.), Judge Rikki Amano (Ret.), Judge Gail Nakatani (Ret.), Judge Sandra Simms (Ret.), Judge Allene Suemori (Ret.) and local mediators Carl Osaki and Michael Nauyokas recently successfully completed mediator certification by the Staus Institute for Dispute Resolution.
BISHOP MUSEUM HONORING THREE
Bishop Museum will give its most prestigious awards to Walter Dods Jr., Patience Namaka Bacon and Dr. Yoshiko Sinoto.
Dods receives the Charles Reed Bishop Medal for embodying the spirit of the museum's founder. Bacon and Sinoto receive the Robert J. Pfeiffer Medal for the advancement and perpetuation of Hawai'i's cultural heritage.
OCEANIC INSTITUTE CHIEF JOINS GROUP
Dr. Bruce Anderson, president of Oceanic Institute, has been selected to join the newly established Marine Aquaculture Task Force, which will address open-ocean aquaculture's risks and benefits and recommend standards that do not harm fish and wildlife and the ecosystems on which they depend.
AD 2 HONOLULU WINS RECOGNITION
For a fourth straight year, Ad 2 Honolulu took first place at the national Ad 2 public service competition at the American Advertising Federation conference in Nashville. Their project was a pro-bono marketing campaign for Hawaii Meals on Wheels.
MODEL CHINESE MOM, DAD NAMED
Nearly 500 people gathered recently to honor Lucille Wong, this year's Model Chinese Mother of the Year, and former judge Arthur S.K. Fong, Model Chinese Father of the Year.
Wong was an early pioneer in instructional TVwho had a popular kindergarten/first grade speech series, "Talking Time."
Fong is a former Deputy and Assistant Attorney General and was a Circuit Court Judge.
BIG ISLAND STUDENT CITED FOR ACTIVITIES
David Saulibio, a student in the architectural, engineering and CAD technologies program at Hawai'i Community College, was awarded the 2005 Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Vocational Education.
Saulibio is active in many vocational and educational activities. He invests his spare time to independently research new products, new construction materials and new software.
GENOA KEAWE AN HONORARY PH.D.
Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame inductee Genoa Keawe received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Hawai'i at Windward Community College's recent commencement exercises.
She was honored for her lifetime achievements in music and her extensive contributions to public service. She has given her time and talent to advance traditional Hawaiian music, often promoting the talents of youngsters under her tutelage.
HPU SPANISH TEACHER HONORED
Tess Lane, associate professor of Spanish and Teaching English as a Second Language at Hawai'i Pacific University, has earned the 2005 Hawai'i Association of Language Teachers Award for Excellence in Foreign Language Teaching in higher education.
Lane received the award at the 19th Annual HALT Conference where she also shared the presentation, "An Ethnographic Approach to Listening: The Voices of Guatemalan Women."
