The Navy has charged a Pearl Harbor sailor with attempted murder in connection with the June 9 shooting of another sailor.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Patrick Criswell, 21, is accused of shooting a 20-year-old sailor in a parking lot of the bachelor enlisted quarters at Pearl Harbor Naval Station. The victim, who is assigned to the USS Lake Erie, was critically wounded but has since been released from Tripler Army Medical Center.

Navy spokeswoman Lt. Barbara Mertz said the man is recovering from his wound, but she declined to say where he is convalescing or whether he has returned to duty.

Criswell is assigned to the USS Paul Hamilton, which is home-ported at Pearl Harbor. Cmdr. Werner Jurinka, commanding officer of the Paul Hamilton, has "preferred" an attempted murder charge against Criswell, who will now face an Article 32 hearing.

A date for the hearing, which is the military equivalent of a civilian grand jury, has not been set, Mertz said. A general court-martial could be ordered after the hearing.

If convicted, Criswell faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, she said. Criswell, a Houston native, is being held at the Navy brig on Ford Island.

Criswell was one of three sailors arrested following the June 9 shooting. The two other men were released without charges following a preliminary investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The Navy did not say what led to the shooting.
