Three gymnasts qualify for elite meet

Gymnasts Megan Harada, Randi Lau and Tracie Tamashiro of the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym have qualified for next week's prestigious U.S. Challenge/Classic Elite Meet.

All three qualified by earning all-around scores at a qualifying meet July 1 at the Hawaiian Island Twisters Gym, judged by specially certified "Brevet" judges.

Lau, 11, scored 35.55, Tamashiro, 15, scored 34.50 and Harada, 14, scored 33.275,

The U.S. Challenge/Classic Elite Meet is July 12 to 14 at Virginia Beach, Va. Elite gymnasts competing in this meet are attempting to qualify for the USA Championships, where members of USA Junior and Senior National Teams are selected.


HEDIN CAPTURES SILVER

Kailua native Danyelle Hedin won the silver medal at the FILA Junior World Women's Wrestling Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania, yesterday.

Hedin, who competed at 121 pounds (55 kg), defeated Olena Malishko of Ukraine, Sabrina Esposito of Italy and Emese Szabo of Hungary in early rounds. In the gold-medal final, she lost to Johanna Mattson of Sweden, 1-2, 2-2.

Hedin, a member of the resident team at the United States Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University, won the FILA Junior Nationals the past two years.


SKATEBOARDER IN ACTION

Kona skateboarder Chris Senn will compete in the Dew Action Sports Tour's Right Guard Open in Denver this week.

At the first stop of the Dew Action Sports Tour in Louisville, Ky., in early June, Senn placed fifth in Skate Park.

The Dew Action Sports Tour's next stop takes Senn to Portland, Ore., for the Vans Invitational, Aug. 18 to 21 at the Rose Quarter.
