Airline shows ocean-safety video

Many Hawai'i-bound travelers are getting potentially lifesaving tips from two city lifeguards, thanks to Hawaiian Airlines and the city's Ocean Safety Division.

Hawaiian Airlines underwrote production by Scott Sorenson of Coco Palms Pictures of a 2 1/2-minute video it is showing on all Hawai'i-bound flights, which carry more than 4,000 people a day. The video features lifeguards Peter Erwin and Bianca Salazar offering safety pointers and explaining warning signs, such as "dangerous shorebreak" and "strong current."

Ocean Safety Division Chief Ralph Goto sought for years to have ocean-safety messages shown to Hawai'i-bound visitors. A friend of his got word to Hawaiian Airlines officials, who agreed with the concept.
