Teen killed in moped crash

A 15-year-old boy died last night after suffering critical head injuries in a moped accident.

Police said the moped he was riding hit a utility pole on the 400 block of Hakimo Road about 7:30 p.m.

The boy was flown by an Army 68th Medical Company helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where he died.

Police closed Hakimo Road from the 400 block to Farrington Highway. The road was reopened about 9 p.m.

Speeding may have contributed to the crash, police said.


EAST HONOLULU


SWIMMER WHO DIED IDENTIFIED

A swimmer whose body was recovered Saturday night by fire rescue specialists near China Wall at Portlock was identified yesterday by the medical examiner's office as Emerald Abing, 17, of Colorado Springs, Colo. Authorities said Abing apparently struck her head when she dove into the water.

Her body was found at the bottom in water about 5 feet deep. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:22 p.m. An autopsy will be performed.

Abing's is the second death of a visitor in the area in a span of five days.

Stephen LeBlanc, 29, of West Wego, La., drowned July 5 in waters off Portlock. LeBlanc jumped off the rocks at Spitting Caves and ran into trouble.


KALIHI


82-YEAR-OLD STRUCK BY CAR

An 82-year-old woman suffered critical injuries yesterday when she was struck by a car in Kalihi while jaywalking, police said.

The accident happened on Dillingham Boulevard, one-tenth of a mile east of Waiakamilo Road, and was reported to police at 11:40 a.m. The pedestrian was taken to The Queen's Medical Center. She was struck by a car driven by a 51-year-old woman.

FOUR MEN HOLD UP MASSAGE PARLOR

Police are looking for four men who held up a Ke'eaumoku Street massage parlor late Friday night, detaining the employees and demanding money from at least one of the customers.

At 10:10 p.m. Friday four men, one armed with a black pistol, walked into a massage parlor at 835 Ke'eaumoku St., police said. The man with the gun approached the cashier, pointed the pistol and demanded money.

He turned to a group of female employees, pointed the gun at them and demanded their handbags, police said. At the same time, another intruder confronted a male customer in one of the rooms and demanded money.

The men made off with about $700, police said.


PEARL CITY


WORK REQUIRES LANE CLOSURES

Two town-bound lanes of Kamehameha Highway will be closed for three days as Hawaiian Electric Co. works on utility poles in the Pearl City area.

The work is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today through Wednesday near the Waiau Power Plant, Honomanu Street, the off-ramp to H-1 Freeway and off-ramp overpass to H-1.

The bike path near Honomanu Street also will be detoured temporarily while crews work in the area.

MAN CHARGED IN DRIVE-BY SHOOTING

Police on Saturday charged a 27-year-old man with multiple felony offenses, including attempted murder, stemming from a drive-by shooting on June 24.

Dennis M.K. Poai, who has no permanent local address, is also charged with three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, five counts of illegal firearm possession, one count of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and one count of possessing illegal drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $90,000.

In the June 24 incident, someone shot at three people in the parking lot of the Prince Kuhio Plaza. No injuries were reported.

EXPECT DELAYS ON HANA HIGHWAY

HANA, Maui — Motorists on Hana Highway will face intermittent lane closures today and tomorrow while a helicopter drapes nets over the cliffside as part of a four-month, $1.3 million rockfall mitigation project.

The state Department of Transportation said the closures will be between mileposts 11.05 and 11.31 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting. For information on Hana Highway traffic conditions, call (808) 248-7070.


KAUA'I


LIVE-FIRE EXERCISE SLATED FOR KEKAHA

KEKAHA, Kaua'i — The Department of Land and Natural Resources will be conducting live-fire exercises at Kekaha Firing Range on Thursday and Friday.

The exercises, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., are conducted as part of normal enforcement staff training, according to department Chairman Peter Young.

Officials said the public should keep out of the range area during the training. Orange cones are posted on both sides of the range while the firing is taking place, and a red flag will be raised from the highest point. Officers will be posted to keep people out.

The Kekaha Firing Range, a mile west of 'Akialoa and Kaumuali'i highway in West Kaua'i, is reserved for state law enforcement agencies and the Garden Island Pistol Club, and is maintained by the Hawai'i National Guard.

FELLOWS PROGRAM SEEKS APPLICANTS

Fund for the Pacific Century, a charitable community service organization, is accepting applications for its Pacific Century Fellows Program.

The program, modeled after the White House Fellows Program, is designed to recognize and encourage Hawai'i's future leaders.

The nine-month program is open to 25 people between the ages of 25 and 40. The fellows will be selected by a committee based on their ability to set and achieve goals, leadership qualities and civic activities.

Individual companies can sponsor candidates for the program. The cost is $2,000.
