Bruce Irons keeps title in family

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons made it two in a row for the Irons family after winning the Mr Price Pro professional surfing contest yesterday at North Beach in Durban, South Africa.

Irons, 25, defeated Marcondes Rocha of Brazil, 15.10 to 15, in the final. Brother Andy Irons, the defending world champ, won the event last year.

"My brother was disappointed when he got knocked out earlier in the event," Bruce Irons said, "but he'll be stoked that I took the title today and kept it in the family."

Bruce Irons won $15,000 in the the World Qualifying Series meet. He is ranked No. 14 on the regular Association of Surfing Professionals Tour.

Irons had scores of 8 (out of 10) and 7.10. Rocha scored a 7 and 8.

METZGER, GIBB WIN

Punahou School alum Stein Metzger and partner Jake Gibb defeated Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, 21-18, 21-14, to capture the Association of Volleyball Professionals' Belmar (N.J.) Open yesterday.

Metzger and Gibb, who won their third meet and lead the AVP season standings, split $20,000 for the Belmar victory.

Metzger and Gibb have 1,314 season points, ahead of Dax Holdren and Jeff Nygaard with 1,278.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh defeated Elaine Youngs and Rachel Wacholder, 24-26, 21-18, 15-13, for the Belmar women's title.


YOUTH BASEBALL


HILO EAST ROLLS TO TITLE

Hilo East routed the West O'ahu Dukes, 20-1, to win the Cal Ripken Minors (10 years old) State Tournament at Walter Victor Baseball Complex in Hilo yesterday.

Kian Kurokawa earned the win for Hilo East.

Bronson Pulgados went 4 for 4, and Kieran Rosas drove in a pair of runs for Hilo East. Randall Iha, Chayce Ka'aua, Koa Matson and Kean Wong added two hits apiece.

West O'ahu reached the final by beating Hilo West, 11-10, earlier in the day.

Hilo East advances to the West Regional, July 21 to 28 at Bel Passi, Calif.
