TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Baseball All-Star Game," 7 p.m., Fox. A grand summer tradition returns. The game is in Detroit's almost-new Comerica Park. The Detroit Tigers — once great, once awful — are making a strong effort at revival. The same may be true of the city. Now baseball's best players gather there. That's for a game that means almost nothing, yet feels like it means everything.

"Wide Angle" season opener, "Beslan: Siege of School No. 1," 9 p.m., PBS. Last Sept. 1, the Russian town of Beslan had its annual celebration, marking the first day of school. Then gunmen held more than 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, hostage and demanding the Russians leave Chechnya. That story is retold in rich detail, including ordinary people who rose to the occasion. One sweet-faced woman recalls sparring with a terrorist who seemed drawn to her.

OF NOTE

"Rock Star: INXS," 9 p.m., CBS. Fifteen contestants — each hoping to be the new INXS singer — will perform. Tomorrow, one will be eliminated.

"P.O.V.: The Fire Next Time," 10 p.m., PBS. In the Flathead Valley of Montana, people accuse environmentalists of damaging the timber and the mining industry.
