LAHAINA, Maui — A 79-year-old Lahaina man was killed yesterday morning when he was struck by a car traveling on the Honoapi'ilani Highway near the Lahaina Civic Center.

Arthur Felix Paahana died after the 18-year-old driver of a 1994 Nissan four-door sedan lost control of her car as she was driving south on the highway and slid into opposing lanes at about 6:50 a.m., police said.

The driver suffered minor injures and was treated at the scene, police said. Speed did not appear to be a factor in the collision, investigators said, but the accident remained under investigation.

All four lanes of the highway were shut down. Police reopened all lanes about 10:45 a.m.

HECO TO DISCUSS NIGHTTIME PROJECT

Hawaiian Electric Co. is holding a public informational meeting tonight to describe its plans for six weeks of night work on downtown streets in September and October.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the American Savings Bank Tower, 8th floor, 1001 Bishop St.

HECO says the $560,000 project will include digging trenches, installing underground duct lines and moving an electrical transformer vault.

The two sites are on Richards Street between Queen and Merchant streets and on Alakea Street near South King Street.

The company wants to do the work at night and on Sundays to not disrupt traffic, but needs a noise variance permit from the state Department of Health.

"We want to minimize the impact on the businesses and the traffic disruption," said HECO spokeswoman Lynne Unemori. "That is why we are asking to do the work in the evening."

The company will try to do the work that is loudest early in the evening.

If the permit is issued, work is expected to take place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday and from 9 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday.
