Perry prevails in senior golf tourney

Harold Perry shot a final-round 1-over-par 73 to win the Aloha Section Classic Resorts Senior Championship yesterday at the Mauna Lani North Course on the Big Island.

Perry finished the two-day event at 3-under 141 to beat runner-up Larry Stubblefield (72) by three strokes. Mike Iyoki (73—149) finished third.

Perry earned a berth in the Senior Club Professional Championship, which will be played at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Oct. 20 to 23.

Also earning berths were Iyoki (U.S. Army Golf Courses), Rich Fite (Kaua'i Lagoons) at 153 and Ron Kiaaina (Makaha Resort) at 154.

To qualify for the nationals, players have to be PGA members in good standing over the age of 50 who are eligibly employed or have Life Member status, such as Perry.

PEARLS GAIN NATIONALS

The Pearl City Pearls swept Mililani Prep on Sunday at Central O'ahu Regional Park to earn a berth in the ASA National tournament next month.

The Pearls won the first game, 2-0, to force a winner-take-all final in which the Pearls prevailed, 2-1.

Mililani Prep beat the Pearls, 1-0, in the opener of the three-game series on June 25.

Krystal Plunkett drove in both of the runs in Sunday's first game while Ciera Senas' RBI single in the eighth won the second game. Brandi Peiler was the winning pitcher in both games.

Pearl City will play in the nationals, Aug. 1 to 7, in Columbus, Ga.


WATER POLO


RAINBOWS IN MONTREAL

Six current and former Hawai'i water polo players will be in the XI FINA World Championships in Montreal, July 16 to 31.

Monika Kruszona (Germany), Iefke Van Belkum and Meike De Nooy (The Netherlands), and Amy Logan and Anna Sieprath (New Zealand) were on the 2005 UH team and will be participating for their native countries.

The other former UH player is Olympian Marie-Luc Arpin, an All-American in the program's first year of competition in 1998. She plays for Canada.
