Kamehameha Schools graduate Mari Chun, 17, shot a 4-under-par 67 and is tied for second after the first round of medal play in the 29th U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo.

Chun, who will attend Stanford in the fall, registered four birdies, an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole and two bogeys.

She is tied with Tiffany Chudy of Miramar, Fla. Angela Park, 16, of Torrance, Calif., leads at 5-under 66.

"Overall, it was a pretty good day," Chun said on the USGA Web site. "I wanted to shoot the best I could every day no matter what. Never give up, of course, just keep going. I don't set boundaries or scores. I hope to shoot just as good or better (today)."

Chun was the best of the five Hawai'i golfers in the tournament.

Mariko Shimozaki, 21, a Seabury Hall graduate who recently completed her eligibility at the University of San Francisco, shot even-par 71 and is tied for 11th.

Cyd Okino, 11, a Kaimuki Middle School student, shot 4-over 75 and is tied for 51st.

Wailuku's Kelly Nakashima, 18, a Baldwin alum and Idaho sophomore, shot a 9-over 80 and is tied at 110.

Honolulu's Jandee Kim shot 18-over 89 and is tied for 142nd.

The field of 144 will be reduced to the top 64 players after today's second round. The 64 will then advance to match play.

Michelle Wie, who won this tournament in 2003 and finished as runner-up last year, is competing in the men's Public Links.

Park lost to Wie in the semifinals of the USGA event last year.

"Michelle ain't here, right," Park said. "I want to go as far as I went last year and maybe a little better than that."
