Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha School's graduate and co-medalist Mari Chun advanced to the second round of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links in Kansas City, Mo.

Chun, who will attend Stanford in the fall, easily dispatched Patty Chawalitmetha, 4 and 3, this morning at the Swope Memorial Golf Course.

Chun, 17, was 5 up after 10 holes and lost only the 11th hole. She had birdies on the par-4 2nd and par-5 12th, and was aided by four bogeys by Chawalitmetha, of Bellflower, Calif.

Kihei's Mariko Shimozaki defeated Sommer Scholl of Riverside, Calif., 3 and 2, to also advance to the second round. Shimozaki, who never trailed, was four up after eight holes.

Chun is scheduled to face Renee Skidmore of Everett, Wash., in the upper half of the draw, and Shimozaki plays Chinese Taipei's Ya-Ni Tseng in the lower half tomorrow.

The remaining field of 32 will be cut to eight Thursday with two rounds scheduled.
