7 Hawai'i athletes meet Bush

National champions with Hawai'i ties met with President Bush as he honored them for winning titles in their respective sports yesterday morning at the White House.

Pepperdine volleyball's James Ka and Jon Grobe, UCLA tennis player Chris Lam, and UCLA water polo players Katie Flanagan and Kamaile Crowell, and C.J. Smith and David Pietsch were part of a group of 15 national championship teams that met with the President.

Ka (Kamehameha), a libero, and Grobe (Iolani '02), an outside hitter, were joined by Lam (homeschooled from Kaimuki), center defender Flanagan (Punahou '02), driver Crowell (Punahou '04), and attackers Smith (Punahou '03) and Pietsch (Punahou '01) as they posed with the President for photos in the White House, and sat on chairs on the South Lawn as he gave a brief speech.


FOOTBALL

  • Wisconsin senior offensive lineman Donovan Raiola (Kamehameha '00 of Honolulu) was named to the CollegeFootballNews.com Big Ten preseason first team.

    Raiola, who is 6 feet 3 and 294 pounds, was named the fifth-best offensive lineman in the conference.


    SOCCER

  • George Washington senior midfielder Audrey Ehrhorn (Iolani '02 of Kailua) was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the spring semester for student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or better. She is an Environmental Studies/Political Science major.


    ROWING

  • Massachusetts sophomore Megan Fink (Iolani of Kailua) was named to the Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the Spring semester for student-athletes with a 3.5 GPA or better. She is a sociology major.


    TRACK AND FIELD

  • San Diego State senior Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll '02 of Honolulu) was named to the Mountain West Conference Spring semester Academic All-Conference Team. She had a 3.03 GPA in economics.


    SOFTBALL

  • Utah sophomore shortstop Sharee Fonoti (Kamehameha '04) was named to the Mountain West Conference Spring semester Academic All-Conference team. She also earned MWC Scholar-Athlete honors for individuals who earned a 3.5 GPA or higher after achieving a 3.75 as an undeclared major.


    GOLF

  • Long Island junior Erica Chong (Hilo '03) was named to the Northeast Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll. She is a Pharmacy major.
