Hilo's Ueno leads division at Junior Championships

Hilo's Whitney Ueno shot a 7-under-par 67 yesterday to take the first-round lead of the girls' 15-17 division at the Junior Golf Championships at San Diego.
Ayaka Kaneko is four strokes behind Ueno in third place.
Taeksoo Kyung, of Wailuku, and Alex Chu, of Kapolei, are five strokes behind the leader in the boys' 13-14 division.
Honolulu's Hayley Young shot a 1-under 71, and is tied for second in the girls, 13-14 division, two strokes behind the leader.
The tournament concludes Friday at various courses in the San Diego area.

U.S. SENIOR OPEN
JAPANESE GOLFER WINS QUALIFIER ON BIG ISLAND
Masahiro Tokunaga won Hawai'i's sectional qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open yesterday at Mauna Lani North Course on the Big Island. Twenty-four golfers tried to qualify for the Open, which will be July 28 to 31 in Ohio.Tokunaga and Motomasa Aoki, both from Japan, shot 1-over-par 73. Tokunaga earned the spot by winning a playoff.
Aoki is the first alternate, followed by Honolulu's Stan Souza (74), California's Don Brown (75) and Washington's Kirk Smith (75), who was low amateur.
